Molecular hydrogen (H₂) is the smallest and lightest molecule in the universe. Since a groundbreaking study in 2007, H₂ has evolved from a chemical side topic to an exciting subject of biomedical research. There are now more than 3,000 publications worldwide investigating H₂ in preclinical and clinical contexts.

Hydrogen Tablets: What really happens in your glass?

Anyone who buys hydrogen tablets is not buying ready-made hydrogen water. They are buying a chemical reaction starter. The main ingredient of most H₂ effervescent tablets is elemental magnesium – a metal normally used in industry for alloys. When the tablet is dropped into water, the magnesium reacts with the water. Hydrogen gas (H₂) is produced – but not alone.

Mg + 2 H₂O → Mg(OH)₂ + H₂. The by-product of this reaction is magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂). It is a strong base, does not dissolve completely, and remains as a whitish turbidity or sediment in the glass.

The chemical limits of hydrogen tablets

The by-product magnesium hydroxide is not a harmless residue – it is a strong base that measurably raises the pH of the water. This effect is chemically unavoidable: it inevitably arises from the reaction that also produces the hydrogen. Taste, pH, and tolerability of the water are thus altered – regardless of manufacturer or tablet quality.

Anyone who wants to take molecular hydrogen in a targeted and controlled manner therefore reaches a fundamental chemical limit with tablets: hydrogen and magnesium hydroxide cannot be separated from each other in this reaction.

Gas loss: Advertised PPM values are often not achievable

Hydrogen is the most volatile gas of all. When the tablet dissolves in an open glass, a large portion of the resulting H₂ immediately escapes into the ambient air – before you even lift the glass to your mouth. Manufacturers advertise 5–10 PPM, but at the moment of drinking, the actual concentration is significantly lower. What is on the package does not reach the body.

The chemical reaction is unavoidable: where magnesium meets water, magnesium hydroxide is formed. This by-product remains in the drinking water, changes the pH, makes it cloudy, and leaves a metallic or chalky aftertaste. Hydrogen tablets do not contain finished hydrogen – they only generate it through a chemical reaction of magnesium with water.
