What is the difference between AWAKE and normal water?
AWAKE is ready-to-drink hydrogen water with over 11 PPM molecular hydrogen, bottled under pressure in a BPA-free can or special glass bottle. In addition to hydration, it provides selective antioxidant properties.
Normal water (tap water or still mineral water) consists of H₂O. It reliably hydrates the body but contains no dissolved molecular hydrogen (H₂) and therefore has no antioxidant effect.
The decisive difference lies in three factors: Composition (AWAKE contains additional H₂ gas), Function (AWAKE provides antioxidant potential), and Production (AWAKE is enriched under high pressure with nanobubbles).
Why do people drink hydrogen water at all?
The answer does not lie in a trend, but in the chemistry of the molecule itself. Molecular hydrogen (H₂) is the smallest molecule occurring in nature. This extreme smallness is its decisive advantage – and the reason why biomedical research has published more than 3,000 publications on H₂ worldwide since the groundbreaking study by Ohsawa et al. (2007) in Nature Medicine. But what makes H₂ so interesting compared to normal water? It is about a problem that affects every body: oxidative stress.
The Problem: Free Radicals & Oxidative Stress
In normal metabolism, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are constantly produced – also known as free radicals. In small amounts, they are useful: the immune system needs them to fight pathogens. But when production gets out of control – due to stress, exercise, environmental toxins, or lack of sleep – oxidative stress occurs. Cells, proteins, and DNA can be damaged.
Normal Water Hydrates, But Doesn't Protect
Normal water is essential for survival. It transports nutrients, regulates body temperature, and flushes out waste products. However, what normal water cannot do: it does not intervene in the process of oxidative stress. It has no antioxidant properties to neutralize free radicals.
The Property of H₂: Selective, Small, Neutral
This is where the scientific interest in molecular hydrogen lies. H₂ is described in research as a selective antioxidant: it preferentially reacts with the most aggressive free radical – the hydroxyl radical (·OH) – without touching useful signal ROS. The only reaction product is water. Due to its extremely small size, H₂ can also passively penetrate biological membranes, mitochondria, and potentially even the blood-brain barrier – without transporters, without detours.

Normal Water: The Foundation of Life
Anyone who drinks normal tap water or mineral water supplies their body with the most important substance of all. Water (H₂O) is a stable chemical compound of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. These atoms are firmly bonded together. The hydrogen in H₂O is not gaseous and is not available to the body as a free molecule (H₂).
To access the hydrogen in normal water, the body would have to split the water molecule (electrolysis) – a process that does not occur in the human digestive tract. That's why normal water, no matter how pure, has an H₂ content of 0 PPM (Parts per Million).

Normal water (H₂O) does consist of hydrogen and oxygen, but the hydrogen is chemically bound. Hydrogen water like AWAKE additionally contains dissolved, free hydrogen gas (H₂) that is available to the body.
